The Gothic Revival and American Church Architecture: An Episode in Taste, 1840-1856

The Gothic Revival and American Church Architecture: An Episode in Taste, 1840-1856 Review

With meticulous research and carefully chosen illustrations, Phoebe Stanton here explores the influence of the English Gothic revival on American church architecture in the mid-nineteenth century, arguing that this fundamentally conservative movement provided a foundation for a new aesthetic. Examining the writings of the movement's leading proponents as well as a variety of important buildings, Stanton offers a comprehensive survey of the architectural principles and models that became most influential in America. She also confirms the importance of the Cambridge Camden Society, which provided the theoretical atmosphere and practical examples that helped to establish new standards of excellence in American architecture.

Made to Play House: Dolls and the Commercialization of American Girlhood, 1830-1930

Made to Play House: Dolls and the Commercialization of American Girlhood, 1830-1930 Review

Buy From Amazon.com

"Formanek-Brunell's study of the United States doll industry provides a fresh perspective on the construction of gender in America... Made to Play House is a pioneering book of interest to collectors, historians of women and of consumer culture, and anyone who has a child who plays with dolls." -- Molly Ladd-Taylor, Journal of American History

In MADE TO PLAY HOUSE, Miriam Formanek-Brunell traces the history of nineteenth- and twentieth-century dolls and explores the origins of the American toy industry's remarkably successful efforts to promote self fulfillment through maternity and materialism. She tells the fascinating story of how inventors, producers, entrepreneurs -- many of whom were women -- and little girls themselves created dolls which expressed various notions of female identity.

"Much of the value of Made to Play House is its deft weaving of business history, cultural history, and material culture studies into a coherent, largely convincing, narrative... The vivid portraits of the female entrepreneurs with an agenda for childhood are the book's most significant contribution to the literature of history and business." -- Mary Lynn Stevens Heininger, Business History Review

"This superb interdisciplinary history deploys mechanical patents and material culture to chart the development of a gendered American doll industry." -- Eileen Boris, Nation

"The book makes a solid contribution to the literature on childhood as well as business history and... illustrates the use that can be made of material culture in historical research." -- Sylvia Hoffert, American Historical Review

Silent Screens: The Decline and Transformation of the American Movie Theater (Creating the North American Landscape)

Silent Screens: The Decline and Transformation of the American Movie Theater (Creating the North American Landscape) Review

Buy From Amazon.com

The single-screen movie theaters that punctuated small-town America's main streets and city neighborhoods since the 1920s are all but gone. The well-dressed throng of moviegoers has vanished; the facades are boarded. In Silent Screens, photographer Michael Putnam captures these once prominent cinemas in decline and transformation. His photographs of abandoned movie houses and forlorn marquees are an elegy to this disappearing cultural icon.

In the early 1980s, Putnam began photographing closed theaters, theaters that had been converted to other uses (a church, a swimming pool), theaters on the verge of collapse, theaters being demolished, and even vacant lots where theaters once stood. The result is an archive of images, large in quantity and geographically diffuse. Here is what has become of the Odeons, Strands, and Arcadias that existed as velvet and marble outposts of Hollywood drama next to barbershops, hardware stores, and five-and-dimes.

Introduced by Robert Sklar, the starkly beautiful photographs are accompanied by original reminiscences on moviegoing by Peter Bogdanovich, Molly Haskell, Andrew Sarris, and Chester H. Liebs as well as excerpts from the works of poet John Hollander and writers Larry McMurtry and John Updike. Sklar begins by mapping the rise and fall of the local movie house, tracing the demise of small-town theaters to their role as bit players in the grand spectacle of Hollywood film distribution. "Under standard distribution practice," he writes, "a new film took from six months to a year to wend its way from picture palace to Podunk (the prints getting more and more frayed and scratched along the route). Even though the small-town theaters and their urban neighborhood counterparts made up the majority of the nation's movie houses, their significance, in terms of revenue returned to the major motion-picture companies that produced and distributed films, was paltry."

In his essay, "Old Dreams," Last Picture Show director Peter Bogdanovich recalls the closing of New York City's great movie palaces -- the mammoth Roxy, the old Paramount near Times Square, the Capitol, and the Mayfair -- and the more innocent time in which they existed "when a quarter often bought you two features, a newsreel, a comedy short, a travelogue, a cartoon, a serial, and coming attractions."

While the images in Putnam's book can be read as a metaphor for the death of many downtowns in America, Silent Screens goes beyond mere nostalgia to tell the important story of the disappearance of the single-screen theater, illuminating the layers of cultural and economic significance that still surround it.

"These photographs and the loss of which they speak signal the passing of a way of being together." -- Molly Haskell

Carolina Plantations: Lost Photographs from the Historic American Buildings Survey

Carolina Plantations: Lost Photographs from the Historic American Buildings Survey Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Today perhaps only a hundred along the coast and another hundred inland remain. Many of the great plantation homes were lost during the time of war, and many more were simply allowed to collapse in the aftermath.

This collection of photographs represents some of the most stunning work present in the Historic American Buildings Survey, an effort to catalogue and document the architecture and building culture of America. In the South, especially, these photographs became invaluable records of a way of life that was quickly disappearing.

The selections here, presented by William P. Baldwin, capture these lost dwellings sometimes as a fragment, sometimes a whole building and showcase the grand tradition and romantic detail of these icons of the South.

Hoover Dam, the Erie Canal, the steel mills of Pittsburgh-America's contributions to industry and technology are among our finest achievements. This book, the only comprehensive illustrated history of American industrial architecture and civil engineering from the 18th to 20th centuries, is an invaluable record of a key aspect of our heritage-and a proud testament to American ingenuity. The lively, informative text is illustrated with compelling photographs, both historic and contemporary, most from the impressive collection of the Historic American Engineering Record (HAER) of the National Park Service. Among the sites featured are the early factories and textile mills of Paterson, New Jersey, and Lowell, Massachusetts, where the American Industrial Revolution began; the innovative River Rouge automobile plant in Dearborn, Michigan; the Sloss Iron Furnaces of Birmingham, Alabama, center of the cast-iron industry; and all types of bridges, from covered wooden structures to the great Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco. LOUIS BERGERON, president of TICCIH (The international committee for the conservation of the Industrial Heritage), has been a visiting professor from France at Cornell and New York University, among other universities. MARIA TERESA MAIULLARI-PONTOIS, secretary of TICCIH, teaches part-time at the Universite de Paris IV-Sorbonne.

The New American Dream: Living Well in Small Homes

The New American Dream: Living Well in Small Homes Review

Buy From Amazon.com

Simplicity, modesty, and skillful design are the principles that have guided James Gauer both in his architecture practice and in the selection of the seventeen outstanding projects featured in this unique compilation of small homes by architects from around the country. A range of housing types and settings -- from a diminutive New York City apartment to a farmhouse in Pennsylvania, a cottage in Santa Monica, and a single-family home in Nashville -- illustrates a variety of architectural styles and design solutions that have transformed these small spaces into comfortable, stylish, and cost- and energy-efficient residences.

More than just a how-to style guide, The New American Dream traces the history of home building in America and offers readers an understanding of how house sizes and costs have soared -- and why they shouldn't. In clear prose, Gauer lays out the virtues of living in small, skillfully designed dwellings, with chapters that address proportion, scale, light, and modesty, among other topics.
